Rosebery

Rosebery was named after Archibald Phillip Primrose, Earl of Rosebery, and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1894-95. The suburb was named in his honour after his visit to Australia in 1883. The suburb was formerly the site of the Rosebery Racecourse which was established in 1906. It was converted to an army camp during World War II. After the War, the racecourse reverted to a training track used by the Sydney Turf Club.

Hayes Road

The warehouse was constructed in 1921 as a dye works, felt mill and hat factory for RC Henderson Pty Ltd, a noted producer of ladies’ hats in Sydney, operating from 1905 into the 1950s. The company made felt hats, panama hats and straw hats, along with ladies’ millinery. As its business expanded, RC Henderson purchased land on Hayes Road in Rosebery in 1920 to establish its dye works and felt mill, as well as a factory to process the material for straw hats.
